Hays Take On: Uncle Franky’s

Hays Take On is a blog series where we explore the Twin Cities in order to find the best and most interesting food and drink stops. Check for updates every Wednesday and follow along to see what we find!

With all of the burger talk going on, we started to feel like a good hot dog was getting under appreciated. So for this week on Hays Take, we decided to check out a place with all of the classic hot dog choices, and some pretty good burgers: Uncle Franky’s.

The Place:

Located just off of Broadway St. in Nordeast, Minneapolis, Uncle Frankys building is everything you’d expect from a legendary hot dog/burger joint. In a stand-alone building with its own parking lot, make sure to get here before the lunch rush if you want a spot. The tight quarters inside really gives this place the “secret spot” feel. The small space by the register would seem like a design flaw, but despite the large menu, most people are ordering their regular and are off to their table. If you’re lucky and get your choice of seat, one of the best places is right at the bar top across from the grills where you can watch all of the food prep action. In the summer, make sure to head outside to the patio to enjoy your meal and the sunshine. While you wait for your food, make sure to play a few games on their Commando game right around the corner.

The Product:

While Uncle Franky’s can fulfill both your burger and hot dog needs, we wanted to make sure to highlight the wieners amidst this big burger craze. If you’re coming in for “just a hot dog” you’ll be in for a tough decision on which one(s) you’re going to try. With 10 options for hot dogs and brats plus polish sausages, you’re going to have a tough time, so might as well grab a few. With classics like the Chicago Dog (including your pickle spear) and the Coney Island Chili Dog (Chili Dog with onions and mustard) as well as some other great options, we had to go with their own specialty: Uncle Franky Dog. Packed with ketchup, mustard, onion, and their green relish, we figured it would be a great test of the quality, and we weren’t disappointed. We also made a note to try their burgers, just for comparison. They also feature plenty of other sandwich options, like Italian Beef, Philly Cheesesteaks, and other chicken sandwiches. To pair with all of these choices is another deep list of side options, including their classic crinkle fries, that also come in cheese, chili, and Uncle Franky style as well as onion rings, cheese curds and tater tots. For drinks you have your classic soda options as well as malts, shakes, and root beer floats.

The Take:

When it comes to the classic hot dog, Uncle Franky’s nails it. With awesome sesame seed buns, plenty of variety in type of dog as well as toppings, you’ll have to make plenty of trips to find your “regular” order. The burgers are definitely a must try as well, perfectly cooked with all of the classic ingredients, plus a great version of the Juicy Lucy, definitely a contender for great quick burger. The crinkle cut fries are always a crowd pleaser and really round out the classic hot dog/burger joint feel that Uncle Franky’s provides. Overall, with so many options you’re sure to find something to enjoy and Franky’s will be on your mind whenever you’re craving something a little greasy. Also, make sure to head down the street after to visit our friends over at Able Brewery (check last weeks take for more info) for a post-meal beer!
