Hays Take On: Wally’s Roast Beef

For Hays Take we like to cover all sorts of food and establishments, as long as they meet our general criteria of good eats, good times, and somewhere we think everyone should try. This week we visit Wally’s Roast Beef in Bloomington, with a simple, cheap, but great menu that pretty much anyone will love.

The Place

On the main floor of the Southtown Office Park in Bloomington is the entrance to Wally’s. With a classic diner atmosphere, featuring the big menu boards above the counter, white and red tile, and lots of retro wall decor. You’ll notice this place gets especially busy around the lunch hour so finding a table can sometimes be difficult. Luckily they run three registers to make sure they can handle the rush.

The Product

The menu is pretty simple, deli sandwiches to start and classic sides to go along. Obviously a place with Roast Beef in the name is a place where you have to try the Roast Beef sandwich. On a classic white bun, with layers of roast beef, and your choice cheese, bacon, and au jus on the side. Just enough food to fill your lunch appetite but not enough to leave you slumping after your meal. On the side they have extra crispy french fries (just the way we like them) mashed potatoes and gravy and more! To wrap things up, you HAVE to try their cookies, just baked enough to be more than just dough, they melt away in your mouth and will make you go up for seconds. Not only does Wally’s provide great food, but it’s also at a great price. Picking up a quick lunch that’s satisfying and low cost is something that’s hard to come by these days without surrendering to fast food, and Wally’s delivers exactly what you’re looking for.

The Take

With a classic feel and good food at a good price, this is definitely a spot to add to your lunch repertoire. You can’t go wrong with an old fashioned roast beef sammy and cookie for dessert here!
