Hays Take On: Taberna Street Tacos

It’s been a while since we’ve hit a taco spot, and luckily a brand new one opened up near Uptown to satisfy our craving! Taberna takes modern cuisine and infuses it into classic Mexican on both the food side and the cocktail side.

The Place

Just a block away from Lake Calhoun (or Bde Make Ska) in front of a brand new apartment complex in their retail space is Taberna. It’s large sign out front and incredible patio is hard to miss while driving by. Inside you’ll see the three different sections of the restaurant. First is the bar area, with a full circle bar with plenty of seating, tv’s inside the bar space so every seat can see, as well as games like foosball and pool on the side. Next is the dining space, with all kinds of seating, from tables to booths to high tops closer to the bar. Then is the outdoor patio space, with multiple tables, umbrellas, and a view down to the lake. Taberna lists itself as a sports bar, which is accurate enough, but really stays more hip and trendy as well as with a more modern feel than most sports bars around the state. With a high energy atmosphere and lots of color, you always feel upbeat energy inside.

The Product

There are lots of options on the Taberna menu, but they all revolve around Mexican cuisine. For starters you can’t go wrong with chips and guac or their incredible nacho plate that’s piled high with all of the classic toppings. They also have an on the cob elote that comes covered in cojita, baja sauce, and classic spices. For tacos, they split things up into two lists: the first being classic tacos and the second being modern tacos. The classic tacos have all of the fan favorites, but we especially love the tender carnitas taco as well as the smokey pork in their Al Pastor. On the modern side they have tons of off the wall options that can satisfy any palette. On the safer side is the Southwestern, that has chicken, cheddar, corn salsa, scallions, cilantro, and a tasty baja sauce pr for the more adventurous, their Banh Mi style taco or the Thai Curry taco among other great options. For dessert they have tons of Mexican classics, like churros, tres leches, and caramel flan! Their cocktail list is extensive as well as their wine and beer selection. Their house made cocktails include a long list of margaritas, from a classic style to mezcal to fruity, it’s a variety that will make you want to try more than one!

The Take

A new sports bar near the lakes that has an incredible modern and energetic attitude, where the food is so good, you can can’t consider it “sports bar food.” With plenty of great options and classics, every Mexican food lover is sure to find something they enjoy!
