Hays Take On: Our Kitchen

This week for Hays Take we move to investigate another spot that specializes in what people call the most important meal of the day: Breakfast. Over the almost 2 years of investigating spots in Minneapolis we’ve learned that the best aren’t always the biggest or the fanciest. Our Kitchen follows that model, with it’s small diner style setup that delivers a satisfying experience and meal.

The Place

On West 36th St. in South Minneapolis sits the tiny tan building with a modest sign and swinging screen door out front. Inside you step right up to the counter, which would be the only seating without the small counters opposite that face the windows. Over top of the counter you can place your order and watch the kitchen magic unfold before your eyes. This is a dangerous situation however, because it usually results in order envy no matter what you choose.

The Product

The menu at Our Kitchen is mainly breakfast focused, however they do have some classic diner lunch items as well. An obvious choice is a classic omelet with a base of crispy hash browns, or go simple and have eggs your style on top. They’re also known for their monster flapjacks or french toast that come with plenty of side options to mix and match, creating your ideal breakfast. On the lunch side, you’ll find classics like burgers, fries, and dogs as well as grilled cheese and a few classic sandwiches. Don’t be afraid to mix it up like we do and try a burger with an egg, hash browns, and bacon to satisfy both your breakfast and lunch needs.

The Take

Good things come in small packages and Our Kitchen provides a great dining experience without the need for fancy amenities. The food is served hot and the atmosphere is fun and exactly what you’d expect from a home cooking style diner.
