Hays Take On: Nico’s Taco Bar

This week we’re back for some tacos just around the corner in Uptown at Nico’s Taco bar. Aiming at street tacos and a friendly vibe, Nico’s is one of a kind.

The Place

Nico’s locations is definitely unique, an old housing building converted into a restaurant, you get vibes of walking to your friends place for a quick drink and home cooked meal. Walking up, you cross over a great porch and into the front door. When inside you can still see some of the structure of the home where walls were pulled away, giving this place tons of character. The main floor consists of plenty of table space with a bar in the back near the kitchen. Heading up the stairs you’ll find the full bar with more seating and an awesome porch patio. With vibrant colors and the renovated features, you definitely get a comfortable homestyle feel. We recommend sitting upstairs near the front so you can enjoy a little traffic and action on the street out front while enjoying your food.

The Product

With lots of options all over this menu, from drinks to apps, to tacos, to meals, you’re sure to get your Mexican street food fix. The tequila list is long, repasado, mezcal, blanco, anejo, you name it they’ve got it. With 5 different margarita types, including a Chile de Arbol for the spicy fans, you’re sure to find a classic or a new favorite. They have plenty of beer, including Mexican specialties and local Minnesotan concoctions. For appetizers we could never skip out on Guac and Nico’s has a great smooth taste that isn’t too thick to break your chips while you scoop. They also feature a variety of homemade salsas that vary from extra mild to extra hot that can be added next to any dish on the menu. Now we’ll take the dive into tacos, our favorite part. 9 meat options, all different kinds of toppings, plenty of add ons and sides, creating a new experience every time until you find your go to. Our favorites were the Pollo de Tinga tacos with some added hot salsa as well as the spicy chorizo tacos to add more heat. Other notables include the shrimp and pescado for seafood taco lovers. Overall, the mix and match aspect lets you make some of your favorites all while having high quality ingredients.
