We’re headed back to Uptown this week to visit Lake and Irving, a spot that brings out local brews, craft cocktails, and a few menu items that bring out the “best in MSP” question…
Lake and Irving is tucked on the west side of uptown just past Lake Calhoun along the south side of the street. The door is tucked on the left side of the building and when you enter you immediately realize that the dining area is much bigger than the outside would lead. With a beautiful bar in the center, the dining area runs along the front windows with tables, booths towards the bar, and extends further back to dining sections that can be roped off for events or parties. Their atmosphere is self described as “casual but classy” and that couldn’t be more spot on. Everything feels comfy but the awesome woodwork around keeps things classy.
The food at Lake and Irving maintains the “casual but classy” idea with lots of recognizable plates with some great twists or quality increases. For starters, their KFC (Korean Fried Cauliflower) is a must try. While cauliflower may not be top on most people’s favorites list, the honey and sesame sauce on the top makes it irresistible. Their truffle fries and aioli are also a big winner if you like a classic. For entrees, they have a few seafood options as well as some sandwiches, but there are really two sandwiches that stand out most and are must try items. First off is their cheeseburger, which is a pat la frieda beef patty smothered in cheese, an incredible secret sauce, all on a nice warm flaky brioche bun. This one is definitely up there on our list of burgers in MSP, with great juicy patties and an addictive taste will make this a go to choice on the menu. The other sandwich on the menu that has taken reign as our favorite is their buttermilk chicken. an enormous piece of chicken is drizzled in an incredible sriracha aioli, with pepper jack cheese, and topped with duroc bacon all on well buttered pieces of la brea sourdough. They don’t skimp on any ingredient here, the chicken extends out past the edges of the sourdough, theres enough sriracha aioli to try on your fries, the bacon is thick cut and the cheese is perfectly melted. The combination of it all is something you can’t find anywhere else. For cocktails, they have a list of their house cocktails, which includes everything from vodka to gin to rye and everything between as well as classics with a Lake and Irving twist. The wine list features a variety of options and the tap list always includes some great local brews.
This place will easily be added to our regular rotation and it’s going to be hard not to get that chicken sandwich or the burger every visit, but with so many great options on the menu we’ll enjoy each time we come back.
