Hays Take On: Kramarczuk

This week we head off to Northeast Minneapolis to visit one of the classics. If you call yourself a fan of brats, sausages, and other delectable meats, you have to have been to Kramarczuk’s. With every kind of meat you could ask for, incredible cheeses, and an awesome relaxed dining experience, these guys cover it all.

The Place

Located in Northeast since 1954, Kramarczuk’s has stood the test of time. While the building at 215 East Hennepin Avenue may have gone through some renovations and changes, the spirit and vibe of the store has remained the same. Entering in through the deli side, you’re greeted by a full 270 degree display of all of the products available. From sausage, to beef, to pork, to any other kind of meat you can think of and then on to cheese and other small products, you’ll find it all inside of the display cases. In the center aisle you’ll find sauces and other dressings for your products to add to your meal. Around the corner you can find merchandise and other goodies to complete your shopping experience. Once you head into the next room, you’ll find their beautiful dining experience area. With tall ceilings and a great lunch room style counter, you have plenty of options to choose from using the ingredients next door. There are plenty of tables and space to enjoy what you just bought or food you’ve had prepared for you.

    

The Product

We could take a deep dive into all of the meat and cheese products available in the original store, but it’s safe to say they’re all incredible. Each one with a unique preparation and incredible flavor, you’ll find the perfect complement to your next cooking venture. If you want to try it out but are overwhelmed with the selection, you can never go wrong with one of their ingredient combined brats. As for the food served in the restaurant, you’ll find plenty of their great products in all of their options. A small menu that’s focused on the great food of Eastern Europe, you’ll find some great options from sausages to sandwiches to stews to desserts, there’s a little bit of everything to try here. An always classic is the Polish sausage, and Kramarczuk’s has a few styles available every day, such as the Smoked Ukrainian, a Polish Kielbasa,  and classic Bratwurst. They also feature a new style every month and this month a holiday special Brat with a sweet slaw and onions inside a nice soft bun. The sandwich list covers all areas of meat, so if you have a classic favorite, you’ll find the Eastern European version here. We’re highlighting the Grinder here today, as their Vienna white bread stuffed full of pepperoni, krakowska, coppa, provolone, lettuce, and red onion, drizzled with vinaigrette was a standout. A sweet finish to this sandwich with their slaw added in is incredible, and the bread is so good you could eat it on its own and be happy. They also have some great cabbage rolls, pierogis, and meatballs to add to the side of your meal as well. To finish, they have homemade cheesecake, custard, and European Tortes. To drink Kramarczuk’s also has some great local beers from Bauhaus as well as one of our favorite European beers, the Pilsner Urquell which is a nice addition to many of their selections.

     

The Take

There’s a reason Kramarczuk’s has been as successful and long standing as it’s been. It starts from the deli where each product has incredible flavor and then gets translated into their menu where each product shines. If you haven’t been, you need to go, and if you have, you’ve probably been back more than once…
