Hays Take On is a blog series where we explore the Twin Cities (and more) in order to find the best and most interesting food and drink stops. Check for updates every Wednesday and follow along to see what we find!
For the month of April, Hays Take On headed out onto the road to try a few places that are a little outside of the MSP area. Our first stop on this adventure takes us to King’s in Miesville! Home of any kind of burger imaginable and walking distance from the home of the legendary Miesville Mudhens city baseball team, King’s Bar & Grill is worth the drive.
Originally a saloon, restaurant, and boarding house in 1874, then transforming into a grocer and video store, all while surviving floods, tornadoes, and fires, finally led to the creation of King’s Bar & Grill in the 1980’s. Miesville is only listed as having 126 residents and Kings stands as one of the most popular buildings in the city (besides the ballpark). Impossible to miss on your way through town, but if you get there around lunch or dinner time, you’re going to have some company. Right when you walk in you’re greeted by a fantastic bar with plenty of seats as well as one of our favorite attributes, a sneak peak down into the kitchen. Behind next to the bar area is a small dining area and even further down the hall is new addition of a larger area with tables. King’s also features some great wall decor, including the original Kings sign, classic neon signage, as well as old taps and other beer related props.
Burgers are by far the specialty of King’s, but with the variety of options of the menu, you’re still going to have a hard time deciding which burger you want! They have now upped their burger total to over 100 different options, with any burger ingredient you can name. From basics like lettuce and onion to some edgier items like eggs or peanut butter to some really off the wall choices like marinara, nacho cheese, and Italian sausage. On top of that, you’re going to find every combination of their ingredients available, so even if you think you have the craziest burger order, you’ll probably find a name for it at King’s. One of our favorites includes the combination of peanut butter and mayo, not sure why or how, but it really hits the spot for us! Also check out their pizza style burgers, including mozzarella, sausage, pepperoni, and marinara as well as the Bases Loaded burger with bacon, cheddar, Swiss, pepper jack, and you probably couldn’t have guessed it: jalepeños, sour cream, and salsa! With any good burger, there is a need for a quality side, and while their fries and onion rings are superb, our secret trick is their well seasoned waffle fries with a side of seasoned sour cream. With a crunch that helps scoop through the sour cream, but a nice soft inside, you might end up focusing on these more than your meal.
King’s has been our top road trip pit stop on the way south for many years, and even worth the 45 minute drive from the cities to check out their awesome burger selection. It’s the kind of place you wish you had just down the road to meet your friends and family at whenever you wanted to grab a beer or a solid bite to eat. We envy those who haveKing’s just down the road, but for now we’ll just have to make our stops in on our trips down to Red Wing or after watching some Mud Hens baseball!
