Well known for their award winning pita bread, fantastic hummus, and even featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, Holy Land is getting the recognition it deserves. Started by Wajdi Wadi, it began as just a small 800 square foot establishment and once business started to grow, with the help of his brother Majdi, it has now grown into what the Star Tribune calls “a Mecca for the international shopper.” Tucked into the heart of Northeastern Minneapolis with a full market and deli area as well as the deli in the Midtown Global Market, this was a must try spot for us.

The Place

Holy Land on Central Ave. is comprised of two parts, the market area and the Deli area, but no matter where you are, the smells of Mediterranean food will always make you hungry. With a huge market floor, you’ll find everything you could ever need, including the legendary pita bread and hummus. Their full selection of Mediterranean products will provide you with all of the best olive oils, cheeses, spices, and everything in between. On the other side in the Deli is a nice open counter to handle the long lines and sneak peek inside of how everything is made. There’s plenty of available tables and space to put down your groceries if you want to put off cooking a little bit longer, but good luck trying to recreate the flavors they’re able to make in the Deli.


The Product

With a huge menu of Mediterranean classics to some adapted American meals including the classic kebabs, shawarma, and gyros with lamb and chicken options, you’ll find a new favorite every time. Now to start, you have to get some of the pita bread and hummus Holy Land is known for or try out their special falafel. This outing, we decided to go after the lamb and chicken gyros, as well as getting some of their tahini and hot sauce on top. With huge chunks of tender chicken, grilled onion, fresh tomato, cucumber, and a dash of curry spice, this can definitely compete with any top Gyro you’ve tried. The lamb also comes out in nice big chunks and is packed away in pocket bread amongst the tomato, cucumber and onions.


The Take

With some of Guy Fieri’s (and our) favorite Hummus alongside award winning pita bread, you’re already off to a phenomenal start at Holy Land. The tender slow cooked meat in the gyros and the shawarma will have you craving a second helping and even with all the ingredients available at the market, you won’t be able to recreate that one of a kind taste.

Been going there for YEARS and love the Holyland chicken sandwich and the appetizer platter! Extra hummus and falafels are a must–let’s meet there anytime Art!
