This week for Hays Take On we venture to a classic style restaurant with some new tricks up its sleeves. Hi-Lo Diner creates the classic diner feel and infuses it with the new food culture we love.
Hi-Lo is a restored 1957 Fodero Diner that sits on East Lake Street in Minneapolis. The original was named the Venus Diner and was just outside of Pittsburgh on the Pennsylvania Turnpike until 2014 when it closed its doors. In 2015 it was bought and restored in Cleveland and then in 2016 made its way to Minneapolis for final touches and a grand opening. From the neon signs outside, retro colors throughout, to the booths and counter inside, everything has that great diner atmosphere. However there are a few changes, like the connection to an old Taco Bell or the milkshake counter thats been turned into a mixology space. There’s also a great outdoor patio space for eating when the weather is warm.
As for the food, Hi-Lo has your classic diner breakfasts, burgers, and entrees each with their own unique spin as well as their signature “hi-tops” that feature sweet and savory combinations on top of a signature fried dough. Starting with breakfast, the TexMex Burrito is stuffed with scrambled eggs, chorizo, seasoned sour cream, cheese, hash, with enchilada sauce drizzled on top. Another breakfast item on our radar is the Potato Chip Omelet, that is the cross of an omelet and a bag of sour cream and onion chips. One of the most popular items from the menu is the Hi-Top called the Gary Cooper, which is fried chicken smothered in maple syrup and gravy all on top of the deep fried pastry, creating an excellently sweet and savory meal. Another Hi-Top that caught our eye was the Mac-Rib, which is mac and cheese over ribs and a mini grilled cheese on the fried pastry. Hi-Lo also features a full cocktail menu, with signature drinks and even adult floats.
If you love diner food and you love sweet and savory, Hi-Lo is your spot. Everything on the menu looks delicious, from breakfast to the drinks, and you can’t go wrong.
