Hays Take On: Dampfwerk Distillery

This week our focus shifts to a brand new Distillery that’s in familiar territory… Dampfwerk Distillery has opened a brand new cocktail lounge in St. Louis Park that sits just across the alleyway from previously covered Copperwing Distillery, but provides a totally different feel and experience. With different liquors and a different vibe, we had to check it out.

The Place

Dampfwerk is back in the industrial area of St. Louis Park off of Cambridge St. and right from the moment you pull up you notice the incredible modern feel. They’ve created a modern lounge feel throughout their cocktail lounge, with large black walls, high ceilings, and an overall minimal feel. The front of the building features a beautiful piece of distilling equipment which has a copper color that pops against the dark walls. Just inside the door is a small lounge area with couches and chairs for a more relaxed setting to enjoy your cocktails. Moving past a separating wall with fireplace inside, you approach the large U shaped bar that’s only decoration is an enormous gold Dampfwerk logo in the back that feels both classy and impressive. At the bar you’ll find small inlets towards the bartenders than feature bottles of their spirits so you can take a look at the base of what’s in your cocktail. Past the bar is the final seating area that includes plenty of table and chairs for a more traditional seating arrangement. While the walls and features are dark, they have plenty of lights to keep things visible, but somehow still maintains that lounge feeling.

The Product

Dampfwerk’s cocktail menu features two sides, one being a list of their cocktails and the other featuring flights and schnapps to get a wide selection variety. The list for cocktails is small, but the variety is large and you get a good representation on many of the spirits the distill. Their Old Fashioned uses their barreled apple brandy with smoked maple and bitters which creates a super dry version of an old classic that packs a punch. Another of our favorites is the Corrado, which is light and delicious with strong tastes of lavender and hibiscus over their aquavit. Other spirits they distill include different Gins, Brandies, and Krauterlikor, that can all be tried in flights! Also, Dampfwerk features cheese and charcuterie boards available to enjoy while sipping your drinks as well. They will also be adding in German pastries from Honey and Rye Bakery on Sundays, so you can kickoff a Sunday Funday the right way!

The Take

We love visiting new spots with unique atmospheres and Dampfwerk definitely executes. It’s a fun relaxed vibe with a super modern feel that complements the incredible variety of cocktails to try. You’re sure to find something to enjoy and maybe even take home to enjoy later!
