Hays Take On: Birchwood Cafe

This week we head through Minneapolis to the western bank of the Mississippi River in the Seward neighborhood to check out Birchwood Cafe. Based around natural, farm-fresh food, this spot covers everything from brunch to burgers to dessert!

The Place

Birchwood Cafe is just located a few blocks down East 25th Street from West River Parkway and the mighty Mississippi River. Tucked into the popular Seward neighborhood, you’ll find street parking is available, but there is also an abundant amount of bike spaces so enjoy this fall weather and ride over! Birchwood is a counter-service style restaurant, and right when you walk in you’re in line that snakes around glass cases displaying some incredible desserts as well as plenty of food options. After you’ve ordered and received your number, you can head to one of many wood tables that are spread all throughout the main dining space or jump up at the two sided bar that overlooks part of the kitchen. There is also a separate dining space that can be closed off by a beautiful barn door for private events and parties. The walls are decorated with art from local artists or groups that is shifted every month or two, each new display has a connection with the area or with the restaurant.

The Product

The food at Birchwood is all created from ingredients that are sourced locally from farms in the Midwest, but this focus doesn’t limit the amount of flavor and creativity in each dish. With a menu that rotates seasonally, as well as other items that are always changing, you’re usually in for a new surprise with every visit. We’ll start first with breakfast, where you can find plenty of egg options such as omelets, quiche, and other scrambles as well as many grain based options such as waffles or french toast. For lunch and dinner you can always count on a fresh soup or salad option based around their seasonal choices. For this edition of Hays Happenings, we tried their incredible Dusk Salad, which consists of mixed greens with colorful beets, bleu cheese, pomegranate, pistachios, and a little chili pepper vinaigrette that adds the perfect amount of kick. Moving onto their plentiful sandwich options, there wasn’t a chance we’d overlook their Birchwood Burger, but this time we decided to get their turkey burger version. With house made ketchup and mustard, lettuce, onion, and pickled cucumbers, accompanying a Ferndale Turkey patty all stacked on their signature Bird Seed Bread Bun, this burger blew us away with freshness. Other entrees include a rotating pasta dish, a 6 oz steak and fries, as well as buttermilk fried chicken. For Dessert they feature homemade cookies, a variety of pies and crisps and incredible dessert bars. They also carry local beers on tap, usually including one or two from our friends over at Able Brewery! They also have a variety of wine, coffee, and tea to pick from as well!

The Take
