Hays Take On: 400 Tavern

This week we head to the north side of Minneapolis in Lauderdale at the meeting of highway 280 and 35W to an unsuspecting restaurant that can be an oasis amidst a heavily industrial area. While also being part of a hotel, the 400 Tavern doesn’t seem like it would be high on our must try list, once you’re inside you’re in a whole new world.

The Place

Just off o 35W at the Industrial Blvd exit is a Marriott hotel that houses the 400 Tavern. While you may see the hotel from the highway, you immediately notice the great build on the restaurant once you enter the parking lot. A great windowed wall on the exterior and beautiful patio out front instantly make you forget you’re in a very industrial area. On top of the windows a white brick exterior leads over to the front door just around the patio with big red Twin Cities 400 sign above. Inside the dining space is divided into a few different sections, with a great wood floor that follows your throughout. On the right is a separate dining space surrounded by the windows you see from the outside, with access to the bar, this space makes for a good small meeting area! Their bar is a full square with TVs inside that makes for a perfect happy hour spot after a long days work. Heading towards the back of the restaurant you’ll find booths, tables, and half high tops for all sorts of dining experiences and different sized groups. Finally in the back is a private dining area for small groups that want to host a meeting with a meal! Overall the atmosphere is bright and energetic, with the windows out front providing great light and the wood and modern touches making things feel new and fresh.

For soups and salads they offer a great rotisserie chicken noodle soup and a rotisserie chicken cobb. For sandwiches, make sure to try the rotisserie chicken or the rotisserie turkey turkey stack, the comes piled high with bacon, avocado, smoked gouda, and a sunny side up egg! Even their main entrees come with rotisserie chicken options, like the pot pie or just the chicken on its own, as well as a brick oven roasted trout. They also use their oven for pizzas that come with a variety of toppings, from bbq, to meat lovers, to veggie. Top all of this off with a great local beer selection that rotates frequently, providing you with something new each visit as well as a sizable wine list and their own craft cocktails. There’s a little something for everyone on this menu, whether you’re stopping in for happy hour and a quick snack or looking for something a little fancier for dinner!
